@POPCARIBE is a visual research project delving into Caribbean identity and memory through the interplay of light, color, and shape. Its artworks feature human figures with piercing gazes, serving as anchors of collective memory and weaving stories of migration, freedom, and resilience.
The project is inspired by childhood sensory experiences in the Dominican Republic: long blackouts would turn the night into a canvas of stars, while the souvenir shops at the resorts where the artist's mother worked introduced vibrant colors, forms, and techniques that sparked creative wonder. These childhood memories are transformed into a pictorial language of dark backgrounds illuminated by vivid colors, evoking constellations of hidden energies and recollections. In this way, a space is created where the everyday, the mythical, and the futuristic blend together, echoing the swift, repetitive techniques of Caribbean art.
Blending elements from the global pop culture of the '90s like iconic anime such as Akira, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Dragon Ball Z, along with video games and TV shows, creates a visual framework that fuses Caribbean tradition with modern-day imagery.
Local cultural symbols, such as the ceiba tree or the casual greeting “KLK,” bring together Taíno deities and chiefs with the complexities of contemporary life. This approach offers a visual exploration of identity, memory, and culture as ever-evolving, multidimensional phenomena. Light, color, and storytelling combine to form an aesthetic laboratory where perception and imagination merge within a constantly shifting Caribbean universe.
